Generell gilt: Abstand halten.

Zapfpistolen. Signal-Anforderungsgeräte („Ampel-Drücker“). Türklinken. Fenstergriffe. Schrankgriffe. Schubladengriffe. Gemeinschaftskühlschrankgriffe. Treppengeländer. Tischkanten. Armlehnen. Lichtschalter. Heizungsthermostate. Einkaufswagen. Telefone. Fernbedienungen. Tastaturtasten. Fahrkartenautomatentasten. Flaschenrücknahmeautomatentasten. Kreditkartenautomatentasten. Bankautomatentasten.

Vorbeugetaktik Nummer zwei: Den Feind hinauskomplimentieren

Attacke!

Common cold – How to arm yourself against the virus war

Every season we receive a biological declaration of war from aggressive microparticles. Gone are the peace of free breathing and painless swallowing. The viruses of the common cold are so diverse and mutable that they cannot be fought by vaccination like viruses of the real flu. However, the common cold can develop from an annoying cold – in a weapons alliance with bacteria – to pneumonia. The following tips can help to prevent cold viruses from hostilely taking over our airways. Effect can be expected thanks to general experience, some studies and the good feeling of being able to stand up to a horde of creeps.

Preventive tactic number one: Do not let the enemy in

Viruses pursue two attack strategies to interfere with the sovereignty of our body:

  • Airborne infection
  • Smear infection

Airborne infection can occur via the so-called droplet infection or via aerosols.

  • In the context of the somehow cute sounding droplet infection, the virus waits for us to get into the talking or sneezing fog or the coughing cloud of a sick person. In this case we should seek our salvation in flight.
  • In very dry air the virus can float around as tiny particle without the moisture base of the droplet. As such an aerosol it can remain in the air longer than a droplet that sinks rapidly. In this way, the virus can also reach people who are not in the immediate vicinity of the infected person. Aerosol viruses can also be transmitted via air conditioning systems.
Exhale and get out

The general rule is: keep your distance. Keep your eyes open in the subway and crowds and, if necessary, flee. Wrapping yourself in your scarf or even wearing a face mask probably won’t hurt either. However, there are indications that a medical face mask protects more from infecting others than from being infected yourself.

Thorough and frequent ventilation

… is appropriate when you need to be in the room with sick people.

Cancel appointments with acutely ill patients

… emotionally intelligent with the compassionate hint „You need to take it easy“. Or you can stand by it. If the coughing guy sneezes at it, it’s his business. A mocking reaction as well. The avowed virus phobic laughs last and thus laughs best.

And now to the somewhat nastier sounding smear infection:

Let’s not shake hands

Good day, congratulations and goodbye – the most important way of virus transmission is the in western countries established ritual of shaking hands. Sociable pathogens are the greatest friends of politeness.

Especially the still common handshake in doctor’s offices should be met with a headshake.

Inevitably, however, it is necessary to touch what virus-infected hands have also touched. And that is a universe: the doorknob on the train. Handles and bars on the train. Nozzles. Signal request devices („traffic light pushers“). Door knobs. Window handles. Cabinet handles. Drawer handles. Refrigerator handles. Stair railings. Table edges. Armrests. Light switches. Heating thermostats. Shopping trolleys. Telephones. Remote controls. Keypad buttons. Ticket machine buttons. Bottle return machine buttons. Credit card machine buttons. ATM buttons.

Money rules the world and cash gets around accordingly. The fact that the DNA of a white rhinoceros was found in a US laboratory examination of dollar bills underlines the biological diversity of banknotes. If sales or service staff touch money and ready-to-eat food with the same unwashed hands or disposable gloves, it is advisable to avoid the store.

Do not touch your face

… is wishful thinking. The average person unconsciously brings his hands with the viruses smeared on them to his face several hundred times a day, scratching, rubbing, wiping, eating with his hands, fiddling his nose, biting his nails. At the entry points of the nose and mouth mucous membranes and the conjunctiva of the eyes, the open day for the viruses begins. Therefore, the ultimate preventive measure is the one we were (hopefully) taught when we were little kids:

Wash your hands frequently and properly

The antiviral effect of hand washing with normal soap has been proven. However, it is not only a question of how often (as often as possible), but also how (as thoroughly and for as long as possible):

  • Use soap.
  • When soaping, turn off the tap again and take your time.
  • Preferably combine it with a short meditation, because stress reduction also prevents colds (see below).
  • Dry your hands well, in public sanitary rooms with paper towel or paper handkerchief.
Wearing cloth gloves

… …is as simple as it is effective. In times of colds, they not only protect against low temperatures, but also against viruses. As long as you don’t touch your face with them and wash them from time to time.

Do the door handles

The regular disinfection of these virus romping places is also recommended at home. Door handles made of the antimicrobial material copper have been proven to reduce the load of pathogens. Unfortunately, copper door handles as a supplement to hygiene management in hospitals and homes are still rarely found in this country.

Preventive tactic number two: Get the enemy out

Isolation has its limits. Nobody wants to and should become a hermit because the virus war is raging outside. But after a train ride, shopping trip, concert or children’s birthday party, you might want to take immediate action from the pharmacy. When applying a

Nasal douche

… an isotonic salt-water mixture runs in one nostril and out the other, hopefully taking the critical amount of viruses with it.

Preventive tactic number three: Arming the immune system

Despite tactics one and two, it is not possible to reliably prevent the enemy viral troops from breaking through. Then they force our cells, for example red and white blood cells as well as muscle and organ cells, to carry out suicidal construction work in order to clone the viruses explosively.

And yet the viral campaign can still be fought back. For this, the body’s own defence system must be well prepared.

Healthy eating, drinking and enjoying

… …is advice that should not come as a surprise to anyone anymore. But it should be repeated here that vitamins from the drugstore and pharmacy are no substitute for fruit and vegetables, whose complex health effects including secondary plant substances cannot be artificially simulated. Nature offers the superfood that strengthens the body’s defence processes. One only has to use this arsenal continuously and correctly, for example prefer organic food, do not boil nutrients to death, mix delicious juices and smoothies as vitamin bombs etc. Natural yoghurt and sauerkraut with their lactic acid bacteria can also support the defence system.

Variety is essential, but many also swear by special foods. In addition to the usual vitamin C suspects such as

  • sea buckthorn,
  • citrus fruits,
  • pomegranates and
  • berries,

ginger in particular is said to have a strong defensive effect. Many health professionals consume a fresh slice of the tuber before they plunge into the microbial turmoil of clinics and medical practices.

Cigarette smoke is poisonous and undermines the defensive forces: Friendly fire, so to speak. Alcohol as a virus killer, for example in grog, works according to current knowledge probably with luck by self-deception, otherwise unfortunately not.

As measures to

Stress reduction

…, a proven important factor in the prevention of disease, stimulants are therefore not very suitable. Rather, one should stand up to the intruders through one’s favourite personal relaxation: mindfulness, forest walks, sports and much more.

Sleep

… is especially important during the cold season. One should allow body and soul the regeneration phases of night and possibly midday rest. In this way the immune system also recovers.

Sauna and hot and cold showers

… increase the blood circulation and are rightly classic immune boosters if they are done regularly.

The ascending footbath

… is another defensive measure using water and a nice greeting from Father Kneipp. It is said to have driven a lot of colds away. One puts the feet up to the calf into 34 degrees warm water and lets hot water run in. Within twenty minutes the water temperature is gradually raised to about 42 degrees, as hot as you can stand.

Lots of physical activity in the fresh air

… has two advantages: Blood circulation is increased and the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract are far from the dry heating air, which makes it easier for viral occupants. Why not take a tough walk every morning? Blessed is the one who has a dog …

Warm feet

… and a body protected from the cold are important. Shivering lowers the temperature in the nasal and pharyngeal cavity; blood vessels contract; the poorly supplied mucous membrane hinders the defence cells and allows viruses to play freely. This is the process that gave the cold its name. Wool socks, lined boots, warm clothing and staying in motion are the key to survival.

Humidifier

… can work against dry, mucous membrane damaging heating air, but unfortunately also as a germ spinner. For this reason, hygiene is to be taken into account as far as possible. The regular change of water and cleaning are a must.

Drinking a lot

… lubricates the weapons of the cellular immune system to finally overstretch the war metaphor. The best weapon oils in the fight against colds are water and teas without sugar and caffeine. Attack!
